Student eligibility regs for CARESfunding a revised, CWC confirms

Eligibility requirement for students receiving money through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Recovery and Economic Security Act have changed, administrators at Central Wyoming College said.

Initially, the U.S. Department of Education gave schools "discretion about how to distribute the funds," CWC's vice president for student affairs said in an e-mail last week.

But on Tuesday the federal agency said that only students who are eligible for certain other aid programs could receive the emergency money.

The new requirements include minimum grade-point averages and completion rates, among other academic standards, Daly said.

"Some funding was distributed before receiving this guidance," she said. "We may have to replace some of those funds with privately raised dollars that would have gone to other students."

She emphasized that CWC is "very appreciative of how quickly the aid was made available for us to support the financial hardships students are enduring due to COVID-19."

However, Daly added, "We're disappointed that there are changes to students' eligibility for funding now."
