Unbeaten Little Snake River shuts out St. Stephen's

It was a long homecoming Saturday afternoon for the St. Stephen's Eagles, who hosted the unbeaten, and unscored-upon Little Snake River Rattlers.

Snake River entered the game outscoring their first three opponents 182-0 and kept the streak alive with a 53-0 win over the Eagles in Class 1-A 6-man football.

St. Stephen's was hampered by the absence of 10 players who were academically ineligible for the game, including four of six regular starters.

In spite of playing many younger players the Eagles opened the game tackling well and moving the ball for a couple of first downs.

"I was happy with our energy and attitude. We just need to continue working hard on better ball security and execution on offense," St. Stephen's head coach Billy Brost said.

Snake River is a patient team, with a roster full of seniors. Like their namesake, they struck when the time was right, reeling off 34 unanswered first-period points on four runs and one long pass.

A pair of nearly identical Eagle turnovers led to two of those scores. St. Stephen's tried to pass the ball to the wings behind the line, and each incompletion was ruled backward pass, or fumble, meaning the ball was live.Rattler defenders covered both errant tosses.

Scoring slowed in the second period as Little Snake River runners purposely ran the ball out-of-bounds instead of trying to run up the score.

Trailing 40-0 at the half, the running clock ensued on the fourth play of the third period, when the Rattlers hit 46 points.

The Eagles have a forfeit win over Ten Sleep this week, then return to action a week from Saturday in a conference game at Dubois.
