Sheridan's bats boom in sweep of Raiders

Jun 7, 2019 By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

Riverton dropped a pair of baseball games Thursday to the the AA American Legion Sheridan Troopers at Roy Peck Field. The Troopers drilled the ball in a 16-7 opening game win over the Class A Raiders, then took the nightcap 15-5, ending it early via the 10-run rule.

Sheridan wasted little time in the 5 p.m. opener, getting a leadoff home run by designated hitter Race Johnson. The Troopers ripped the ball for nine doubles and a pair of home runs on the game.

Rylan Koehn started on the mound for Riverton, throwing 95 pitches in two innings of action and yielding a dozen hits. Derick Lange came on in relief, throwing 63 pitches over the final five innings of the game and giving up four hits.

"Rylan threw strikes. He didn't walk a lot of people," Riverton manager Troy Brown said.

"People in this league can hit a fastball. Rylan just needs to develop secondary pitches."

The Troopers jumped ahead 13-2 after their first three at bats, but the Raiders came back to score seven combined runs in third, fourth and fifth innings to make it closer.

The highlight for Riverton came with a three-run homer by Blake Dale that sailed high over the fence in left field.

The Raiders held Sheridan scoreless until the sixth, when the Troopers added three insurance runs.

Sheridan 15, Riverton 5

Riverton played well through the first three innings in the late game, but the wheels came off in the fourth and fifth innings. Sheridan scoring a dozen runs and ended the game in the bottom of the fifth via the 10-run rule.

Kendric Muehler and Cody Frazier each picked up walks along with a single by Jereko Martinez. Martinez drove in Muehler, and Blake Dale hit a single over shortstop to drive in Frazier. Martinez later reached home on an error. Riverton led 3-2 after one inning.

Sheridan tied the game at 3 in the top of the third, but Riverton came back in the bottom of the inning scoring twice after Frazier walked and was driven home by a Dillon Fabricus double to deep center field. Fabricus scored from third on an RBI groundout by Aquillo Friday to shortstop, and the Raiders led 5-3.

The lead was short-lived. Sheridan picked up four runs in the fourth inning, and the Raiders couldn't answer.

The Troopers hit four doubles in their final at bat, which, when combined with walks, batters hit by pitches and Riverton errors, quickly put the game out of reach.

Trey Draper took the loss for the Raiders, throwing into the fourth inning before Vincent Brown came in with two outs. Kendric Muehler threw 43 pitches in the final inning.

"I was happy with our three young pitchers. These young guys that normally don't get to start to pitch, threw strikes." Brown said. "Rylan, Derick Lange and Trey Draper all threw well. It makes us better as a team."

There were some spectacular defensive plays in both games. In the late game Dillon Fabricus gunned down a Sheridan baserunner at third on a blazing snap throw to Cody Frazier.

In the opener Derick Lange threw a pickoff to Aquillo Friday and caught a Sheridan runner.

Ethan Rognon and Friday both made spectacular plays on foul balls behind first base.

Perhaps the best play of the game came when Vincent Brown picked up a ball hit to right center field and threw a strike 250 feet to Frazier, who tagged out a very surprised Sheridan runner.

The Raiders dropped to 7-7 on the season with the losses to Sheridan.Riverton hosts the Powell Pioneers on Saturday in a pair of afternoon games at 1 and 3 p.m.
