The way it was: River crossing --1927

Oct 19, 2013 Staff

Sometimes technology develops faster than infrastructure, which was the case with automobile traffic in Fremont County.

Cars became available before good roads existed in many places.

Travel to the Dubois area from Lander was easier by car, but crossing the Wind River still posed a challenge.

Here, cars in the upper Wind River Valley waited to ford the river at a low spot.

Motorists were encouraged to wait until the car after them had crossed, in case the followers needed help.

This picture is believed to be from 1927.
