Man killed in Shoshoni; deputies arrest suspect
May 17, 2013 - By Katie Roenigk, Staff Writer
A 45-year-old Shoshoni resident has been arrested on second-degree murder and domestic violence battery charges in connection with the Wednesday morning death of Charles Darrell Laster, 65, of Shoshoni.
The death was listed as a cardiac arrest on Fremont County Sheriff's Office reports, and Coroner Ed McAuslan on Thursday said he didn't suspect foul play in the incident.
"I'm not going to call it suspicious," McAuslan said. "At this particular point we don't know what happened to him. ... His wife found him unresponsive in the morning."
The call was reported at about 7:10 a.m. Wednesday from 115 Main St. in Shoshoni. Officials said Laster was pronounced dead at the scene; final autopsy results will be available in four to six weeks.
McAuslan guessed the Sheriff's office must have "picked up on" something that caused them to arrest Shey Elan Bruce, 45, of Shoshoni, on charges of second-degree murder and domestic violence battery.
"(An investigation) determined the probable cause of death as homicide," FCSO Lt. Bill Braddock said in a press release.
Bruce is being held in the Fremont County Detention Center. He had his initial appearance Thursday in Riverton Circuit Court and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
Braddock indicated that the domestic violence charge involves someone other than Laster.
"The second charge is referring to another person," Braddock said, adding, "I just can't go into too much more detail."
Court officials would not release charging documents, explaining that Bruce has not had the opportunity to review the case with his attorney. The investigation continues through the Fremont County Coroner's Office and the Sheriff's office.
