The way it was: Lander-Riverton soccer -- 1996

Lander and Riverton didn't play each other in high school soccer this year due to weather-related postponements that fouled up the schedule. That wasn't the case in 1996, however, when mid-May brought some great high school soccer action to Fremont County as the talented teams from Lander and Riverton faced off.

The Riverton boys and Lander girls were among the best in Wyoming that year, but the Lander boys and Riverton girls weren't far behind. The RHS boys held off Lander 2-1 in May when all-state Joe Vasco scored the game winner for the Wolverines. Jason Cox had Lander's goal.

In the girls game, Riverton took a 1-0 lead on Michelle Thompson's goal on a windy day at RHS. Lander's Jenny Watkins evened things up at 1-1 off a nice assist from Sancy Florquist. Amber Frye put the TIgers in front for good with a goal late in the first half. Megan Amadio had the assist.

Lander's girls ended the year with an 11-1 mark, losing in the state semifinals to Cheyenne East. The Riverton boys finished 9-2, falling in a shootout to Casper Natrona in the opening round of the state tournament.
