Walter Carlin "Bud" Skates died Thursday, March 28, 2013, at his home in Riverton. He was 91 years old.
A celebration of life will occur later this summer near Cody.
Walter Carlin Skates was born Aug. 31, 1921, in Haakon County, South Dakota, the son of Walter E. and Ruth (Carlin) Skates.
Mr. Skates was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy in the Pacific Theater until the completion of the war.
He worked as a broker for Ryan Grocery Company of Billings, Mont., and also owned and operated a ranch and grocery store in Eagle Butte, S.D. He worked for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe as a manager of the Super Value Store and Sewing Center. Later in life, he worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and then owned a small engine repair shop.
His family said he enjoyed playing cards, riding horses, bowling, fishing and was an ardent Denver Broncos fan. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He was a 50-year Masons member and a member of the Lions Club, American Legion, VFW and Elks.
He is survived by his sons, Ronny Skates and his wife Cheryl of Helena, Mont., and Dave Skates and his wife Judy of Lander; daughter Renee Brost and her husband Kelly of Riverton; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and brothers Jack Skates of Cody, Robert "Bob" Skates of Billings, Mont., and Fred Skates of Denver.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Marge Boehrs, Doris Brown and Wanda Hellod; and brother Bill Skates.
