Tiger boys face top-seeded Douglas at stateMar 5, 2013 By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor
Lander Valley High School boys basketball coach Terry Hopkin knows his players won't be scared of playing No. 1 seed Douglas Thursday in the opening round of the Class 3-A state tournament.
The game starts at noon at the Casper Events Center.
In December, the LVHS Tigers beat Douglas 41-38 during the Lander Classic at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.
"You have to beat the best in order to win it, so you might as well get them early," Hopkin said.
Douglas claimed the No. 1 seed after beating Rawlins 63-56 in the Class 3-A East regional championship game at Worland High School.
Douglas knocked off Glenrock 59-56 in the opening round.
In the semifinals, Douglas beat Newcastle 52-41.
"Douglas is much improved," Hopkin said.
"They are all about 6-foot-1 or 6-2.
They are very strong. It's going to be a tough matchup."
Powell beat Star Valley 50-37 in front of its home fans for the top seed from the west division.
Cody finished in the No. 3 position.
LVHS ended fourth at the three-day tournament.
"Our No. 1 goal at the start of the season was to get to the state tournament," Hopkin said. "After we beat Lyman, it showed that we were pretty excited to get there."
