Wyoming State Winter Fair begins Feb. 23

The 46th Annual Wyoming State Winter Fair is set to begin next weekend with changes for regular attendees.
Organizers said the fair's trade show, which will take place Feb. 28 through March 2 at the Lander Valley High School Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse, will include new vendors with a wide variety of goods ranging from jewelry to clothing to food and entertainment. Admission to the trade show is $3 daily; it begins at 4 p.m. Feb. 28 and at 11 a.m. March 1 and March 2 and closes at 9 p.m. each day.
A steer and heifer show has been added to the fair as well, with interest running high based on pre-entry applications that have already come in. The event will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Lander Old Timer's Rodeo Arena, followed at 7 p.m. by the miniature bull riding show in the same location. Organizers said contestants have signed up for the latter competition from five intermountain states.
Other events begin at 9:30 a.m. that day, also in the arena.
On Sunday, Feb. 24, the annual horse show will begin at 9 a.m. in the LOTRA. The poles and barrels contest is at 2 p.m., also at the LOTRA. For more information on the horse show, call 332-2437 in the evenings.
The celebration continues during the week. On Thursday, Feb. 28, an open microphone session is scheduled for 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the LVHS fieldhouse, followed by the snowball prince and princess contest at 6 p.m. Opening ceremonies and booth awards will begin at 7:30 p.m., also in the fieldhouse.
On Friday, March 1, crafters can display and sell goods for free during the open craft show 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the fieldhouse lobby. A 4-H cake raffle will take place at noon in the fieldhouse, followed by another open microphone session 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aaron Baldes is slated for 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. followed by a Rummel Dance 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and another event 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
A 4-H cake raffle will be ongoing beginning at noon Saturday, March 2, at the LVHS fieldhouse. Open microphone happens again from noon to 12:30 p.m. followed by a talent show from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Seth Finley will take the stage at 5:45 p.m., Josiah Sifuentes at 6:45 p.m. and Delta Hazz at 7:30 p.m.
A dog show will be Saturday, March 9, as part of the winter carnival. Registration is at 7:45 a.m. at the Fremont Center of the Fremont County Fairgrounds in Riverton. Events begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by obedience classes.
Organizers said the schedule is subject to change. Main floor vendor spaces for the trade show are nearly sold out with about five spaces left, and the balcony area is filling up too. Anyone who wants a vendor space should contact Marlene Young at 332-4011. Trade show applications are available through Young or at the Lander Area Chamber of Commerce, 160 N. First St. Winter fair books will be on newsstands at the Lander chamber.
