Helen A. Sweeney Osterhaus, the mother of Riverton resident Sharon Neel, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa. She was 91 years old.

Services have taken place.

Helen A. Sweeney Osterhaus was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Sherrill, Iowa, the daughter of Louis and Viola (Tigges) Klein.

She married Edgar Sweeney on Aug. 21, 1941, in Sherrill, Iowa. They farmed in Holy Cross, Iowa, until his death May 16, 1971.

She later married Cletus Osterhaus on Aug. 27, 1977, in Holy Cross, Iowa. He died May 9, 1994.

She was a member of the Resurrection Parish and a volunteer at the Dubuque Arboretum for many years.

She is survived by her children, Richard Sweeney and his wife Donna of Holy Cross, Iowa, Terry Sweeney and his wife Mary Ann of Marion, Iowa, Sheila Zasoba and her husband John of Naples, Fla., Sharon Neel and her husband John of Riverton, Tim Sweeney and his wife Linda of Mount Horeb, Wis., Colleen Carl and her husband Don of Hutchinson, Minn., Jan Sweeney and his wife Cindy of Dubuque, Iowa, Pat Sweeney and his wife Stacy of Dubuque, Iowa, Mary Jean Sweeney of Dubuque, Iowa, Lisa Grekoff and her husband Scott of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Kathleen Shores and her husband Tim of Hartford, Wis., stepdaughter Deb Osterhaus; stepdaughters-in-law Karen Osterhaus and Marilyn LeClaire and her husband Ron; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; sister Viola Wild of Dubuque, Iowa; sisters-in-law Romana Sweeney, Florabelle Kluesner, Evelyn Friedman and Verna Klosterman; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Edgar Sweeney; second husband, Cletus Osterhaus; brother Sylvester Klein; sister Hilda Schueller; stepsons Dale Osterhaus and Dennis Osterhaus; and many in-laws.
