Rustlers still handle Miles

Feb 14, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

CWC and Casper College are now tied for second with 10-3 marks. CWC is 20-5 overall.

Paris Burns showed he belonged in the startling lineup Wednesday night for Central Wyoming College.

The freshman guard ran the offense well and also scored 16 points to help carry the Rustlers past Miles Community College 60-49 in a Region IX men's basketball game.

Burns replaced regular starting point guard Davion Pearson. Pearson pulled a hamstring last week at Western Wyoming Community College but played through the pain in a loss Saturday at Sheridan College.

Burns found out Monday he was going to start for CWC. Pearson was dressed against Miles but did not play.

"I knew that I had to step things up," Burns said. "I have started before, but I haven't started in the point guard position."

Burns played like a veteran for the Rustlers. He was on the floor 37 minutes, with four assists and four turnovers.

"I wasn't nervous. I just knew that I needed to do anything to help the team win," Burns said.

The win kept the Rustlers in striking distance of being the Region IX North champions.

CWC and Casper College are now tied for second with 10-3 marks. CWC is 20-5 overall.

Northwest College downed Casper College 76-68 on Wednesday night.

Sheridan College is first at 11-2 after escaping with an 86-84 overtime win over Western Wyoming.

"We still have a chance to hang a banner in this gym," CWC men's coach Shelby Lindley said.

Good shooting

The story early was outside shooting. CWC knocked down six 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes. The Rustlers ended the game with nine 3-pointers.

"I was able to get everyone open," Burns said.

"Things started to go our way. It was very excited at the end to see my coach happy and my teammates happy. "

Miles played in a zone defense for the entire game.

"Miles stayed in the zone the whole time because they couldn't guard our bigs," Lindley said. "The coach wanted to keep the ball out of our bigs and make our guards beat him. I don't think that our guards did a good job of attacking the zone."

The Rustlers could never pull away from Miles in the first half, and Miles was up 45-41 with 10 minutes left in the game.

The deficit forced Lindley to call a timeout.

Afterward, CWC's Roozario Wiggins dunked the basketball after a miss from Burns to turn the game for the home squad.

"We just brought more energy after the timeout," Lindley said. "Roozario had a big play. He does big plays for us. He sparked us."

Wiggins scored six consecutive points for a 51-47 lead.

"Roozario came through in the clutch," Burns said.

Tanner Newbold swished a 3-pointer for a 54-49 lead.

Burns put in four straight points for the victory.

"Paris did a lot of good things," Lindley said. "We are starting to understand each other. Paris got to the rim. That is what he needs to do."

CNewbold finished with 12 points on four 3-pointers.

CWC ends the home schedule at 5 p.m. vs. Gillette College (9-4 in Region IX play).

"We have a big game on Saturday," Lindley said.

"Gillette is a very good basketball team.

Gillette has some good wings and athletic guards. Their chemistry is a lot better."

Lindley doesn't know if Pearson will be in the lineup for CWC on Saturday night.

"We are going to go day to day with Davion," Lindley said. "Our biggest concern right now is the Region IX tournament."
