Wolverines hosting West 4A regional wrestling tourney

Feb 14, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Riverton High School has aspirations of winning its first Class 4-A West wrestling title since 2003. RHS hosts the conference tournament Friday and Saturday at Wolverine Gym.

Wrestling starts at noon Friday with the early round matches at Wolverine Gym.

The semifinals end the first day at 7:30 p.m.

Riverton, Casper Natrona, Kelly Walsh, Green River, Rock Springs and Evanston make up the field for the Class 4-A West side.

"It's going to be fun for our guys to be at home," RHS coach Jay Galey said. "The big thing is if we can get a lot of people in here and really get them making some noise that will give us a boost. We are going to need that."

The Wolverines enter the postseason ranked No. 5 in Class 4-A. Natrona is No. 3.

"We are going to have great opportunities to do well as a team," Galey said. "It would be a lot of fun to win regionals. We have a great group of guys. This senior class has just done everything that we have asked of them."

Natrona won regionals last year.

"I believe that we are prepared and ready to put an end to the season," Natrona coach Scott Russell said. "It's time to make dreams come true."

Casper Natrona beat RHS in a dual in December. Natrona went 4-0 in the conference duals last month.

"Our strength has been in the quality of wrestlers in our middle and upper weights," Russell said. "We have an exceptional senior class. The regional title will go to the team with the most depth."

Regionals is a double-elimination format. The top placers from regionals receive a seed for the Class 4-A state tournament Feb. 22-23 in Casper.

"What has to happen for us is our No. 1 guys need to do what they are supposed to do," Galey said. "Then our No. 2 guys have to beat some people along the way. If that happens, then I think that it will be a pretty interesting race."

The finals go at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

"The more guys that we can get coming into the semifinals will be huge," Galey said. "The biggest thing is that we have to keep the other teams from knocking our guys off early."

The admission for tickets prices both days are $4 for adults and $3 for students. An all-tournament tournament pass is $9 for adults and $6 for adults.

"I believe the team race will be extremely close at regionals," Russell said.

Riverton's lineup

"This week in practice they have really been getting after it," Galey said. "The atmosphere in our practice room has been a little bit different. It has been pretty quiet The intensity has been pretty high."

RHS is open at 126 pounds because of a injuries to Michael Menzies and Joey Roseno.

"We are a little banged up in some spots," Galey said.

Roseno broke his foot. Menzies will have shoulder surgery on Friday. RHS also is open at 113 pounds.

RHS will continue to go with Joey Ladd at 106 pounds.

Gavin Wilson is in the 120-pound class. Ahren Wempen and Hank Osborne will be at 132 pounds.

T.J. Turner and Steven Reinig are in the 138 bracket.

Tyler Allen and Jordan Whitson are slated at 145 pounds.

"I just really like our team right now," Galey said. "We started our taper this week. I think that they have responded well."

Beau Batista and Bridger Oman will wrestle in the 152-pound class.

Rudy Batista and Chris Holcomb have earned a starting position at 160 pounds.

T.J. Galey is the only RHS wrestler in the 170-pound division.

Reece Prosser and Kyle Page will both be at 182 pounds. Casey Savage (195 pounds), Jacob Flescher (220), Riley Reichert (220), Dawson Steeds (heavyweight) and Ransom Slack (heavyweight).

"The younger guys have to come through and beat some people to keep some of their guys from scoring points," Galey said.
