Two in the running so far to replace Brian VarnFeb 13, 2013 By Christina George, Staff Writer
Work is under way to find a replacement for Fremont County Attorney Brian Varn, who is resigning from his post at the end of the month because of family obligations out of state.
Fremont County Republican Party chairman John Birbari said two candidates have applied for the seat so far.
Cheyenne-based attorney H. Michael Bennett is the latest to submit his application.
"It's my understanding he grew up in Lander and is a graduate of Lander Valley High School and would like to get back here," Birbari said about Bennett.
Bennett joins Fremont County deputy attorney Pat LeBrun.
LeBrun announced his intention to seek the seat Jan. 29, which was the day Varn formally notified the Fremont County Commission about his resignation that is effective Feb. 28.
Because Varn is a member of the Republican Party, his successor must belong to the GOP.
Birbari said candidates will be interviewed at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the 9th Judicial District Court at the Fremont County Courthouse in Lander.
The meeting is open to the public.
Birbari then will provide up to three names to the commission, which has to meet within five days of the notification and interview the candidates.
Birbari said he thinks the interviews with commissioners will occur during the county board's Feb. 19 meeting.
