Miller second, Alexander sixth for Tiger wrestlers at Thon tournament

Feb 3, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Jacob Miller made things interesting for Lander Valley High School Saturday in the Ron Thon finals at Wolverine Gym, but Gillette's Dani Fischer claimed a 7-4 victory for the championship at 145 pounds.

Miller, a senior, went head-to-head with Fischer for the all three periods. Fischer is a three-time Class 4-A state champion for the powerful Gillette Camels program.

In the finals, Fischer had a 2-1 lead after the first period. In the second and third periods, Fischer controlled the speed of the match and never gave up the lead.

Miller started out the season in the 152-pound class. The senior made the switch to 145 pounds after Christmas break.

Miller is one of the top-ranked wrestlers in the Class 3-A division in his class and should be a title contender later this month at the Class 3-A state tournament in Casper.

"I was just a little too small for 152 pounds," Miller said. "I just needed to cut a little bit more weight."

Lander's Ty Alexander finished sixth in the 120-pound class.

Miller's bracket

Miller earned a spot in the championship finals after he pinned Hayes Stone from Cheyenne East in a time of 3:10.

"The semifinal match was pretty tough," Miller said. "That kid is really tough. He is really hard on his feet. It was a good match."

Miller opened the grueling tournament with an 11-1 decision over Zack Larson from Thermopolis.

Miller kept in the top half of the bracket on a 7-2 win over Casper Natrona's Josh Palomo.

In the quarterfinals, Miller won a close 3-2 battle over Batista Covolo from Evanston.

"The Ron Thon has been really tough," Miller said. "There is no bad kid in the weight class. You know that every kid is going to be a battle. It's tough all the way around."
