Wind River Roundup earns rodeo awardNov 9, 2012 By Katie Roenigk, Staff Writer
The Wind River Roundup PRCA Rodeo Committee has earned the Mountain States Circuit Finals Small Rodeo of the Year award for 2012.
John Campbell, chair of the committee, said the Wind River Roundup also could be chosen as 2012 PRCA Rodeo of the Year.
"We're one of five nominated," he said this week.
Lori Franzen, owner of the Powder River Rodeo Company, said it's exciting to be considered for the national award.
"Those don't come around so often," Franzen said. "To be one out of five in America is one of the biggest honors you can receive."
She also has been nominated for the stock contractor of the year award, while local bullfighter Cody Webster was nominated for bullfighter of the year and secretary Amanda Corley-Sanders was nominated for secretary of the year. The awards will be handed out Dec. 5 during the PRCA Awards Banquet
"This might be once in a lifetime," Franzen said. "Riverton (could) be put on the map nationally."
This was the 30th year the local rodeo has taken place, but Campbell said an active committee has been in charge of the event for the past five years.
He congratulated the group for their accomplishment during their regular meeting this month.
"It was the work the committee put in to make the rodeo cowboy friendly and appealing to everybody," Campbell said.
The mountain states region covers Wyoming and Colorado and includes 56 rodeos according to Campbell, who said Riverton's rode has never won the annual award before. The Wind River Roundup was nominated for small rodeo of the year in 2011 and 2007, and in 2009 Riverton's even was named the most improved rodeo of the year.
