Oct 23, 2012 - Craig M. Shaw. RivertonEditor:
I have read several letters to the editor and am compelled to respond. I don't remember the first writer's name. The second was from Ron Howard. They both referenced Reagan's, "Are you better off now than you were four years ago?"
That is a very good and relevant question, but it is not, from my standpoint, the most important question. In the first letter to the editor the man said, I believe, "that he has a new job, a new home, a new wife and a daughter." That is good; that is the American dream. The second, from Mr. Howard, talked about perseverance, hard work and determination. Again good values, good work ethics. That is what this great country was built on.
My concern is what happens when hard work, dedication, determination, perseverance and good work ethics are not enough. What happens when inflation eats away at your paycheck? What happens when our fiscal irresponsibility causes our children, our grandchildren and their children to lose the chance for that American dream? What happens when they are in the situation where trying to put enough bread on the table is the only focus they have? What happens to the World when the country that has always come to their rescue no longer has the resources to do so? Will China be the benevolent country we are? Will Russia?
At the current rate of our deficit spending, you can count on one hand the years this country has left before it economically implodes. So I believe the relevant question isn't, "'Are we better off now than four years ago?" but, "'What do we need to do to stabilize this country's economy to insure its future and the future of generations to come?"
It will not be easy, but the alternative will be much worse.
