PAVILLION -- Wind River rolled over Fremont County rival Wyoming Indian High School 47-0 Friday night to pick up its first win of the season.
The Chiefs fall to 0-3 on the year and are still looking for their first score of 2012.
Wyoming Indian opened the game on a balanced running attack by Joey Aragon, Lynn Brown and Ramiro Gonzalez that moved the ball inside the Cougar 20-yard line. Gonzalez highlighted the drive on a 40-yard breakaway run down the left sideline.
Wind River's defense dug in, and the Chiefs turned the ball over on downs at the 16.
It didn't take the Cougars long to score, as Roger Wagon raced 84 yards on the first play from scrimmage for the opening score. Wagon finished the night with an impressive 124 yards on just three carries.
After an exchange of punts the Cougars found the end zone again on a 12-yard run by Ward Gordon with 1:56 left in the first.
Joe Lupher's kick sailed into the end zone, and the Chiefs set up at the 20 but fumbled the ball on the opening play of the drive. Cougar junior Tyler Rupe picked up the pigskin at the 23 and scored. The two touchdowns were separated by just 12 seconds.
Wind River sophomore Brodie Miller had an outstanding defensive game and rocked the Chiefs with solo tackles including a head-on collision with Jesse Moss on the ensuing kickoff return that echoed off the walls of the stadium at Leroy Sinner Field.
Wyoming Indian picked up a pair of first downs on the drive and completed its only pass of the game to tight end Trevor Williamson, but tough Wind River defense stalled the drive at midfield.
Ryan Weliever and Cole Bossert both tallied solo tackles and played well defensively throughout the contest.
Wind River ran out of a tight formation in the closing minutes of the half, with Zac Noffsinger, Gordon, Bossert and Dylan Lookingbill all picking up good chunks of yardage. Bossert moved the ball to the four, and Gordon crashed in on first down giving the Cougars a 27-0 lead at the half.
Lupher drove the ball into the end zone again, and the half drew to a close.
Wyoming Indian mounted another short drive but stalled again. The Cougar offense roared into full gear after that. Wagon gained 37 on reverse, and Weliever broke into the secondary on a 35-yard scoring pass from Zac Lindstadt. Gordon's conversion run lifted the Cougars to a 35-0 advantage with 7:14 left in the third.
Miller drilled Moss again on the ensuing kick return, and Lindstadt intercepted Aragon at the Wyoming Indian 36.
Gordon put together a spectacular,16-yard, highlight-reel-style run on first down.
The senior stiff-armed a Chief defender, cut left, ran over another would-be tackler, spun sideways, regained his balance, and drove two more defenders to the ground before he came to a stop at the 17.
Lookingbill picked up 12 yards on consecutive carries, and Gordon capped the drive on a seven-yard run.
Lupher hit the ball a bit high on the ensuing kickoff and it bounced off the chest of a Wyoming Indian up back at the Chiefs 34, and Miller recovered the ball for the Cougs.
Runs by Lindstadt, Lookingbill and Bossert moved the ball to the 6 and Bossert powered in from there for the Cougars' final score.
With Wind River leading 47-0 the mercy rule came into effect, and the fourth quarter was played under a running clock by the Wind River junior varsity.
Both teams hit the road this weekend, with the Chiefs at Saratoga and Wind River in a key matchup with 3-0 Rocky Mountain in Cowley.
