Minors all-stars pound Green River, 18-4

Jul 20, 2017 - By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor

A nine-run third inning helped propel Riverton into a second-round matchup with Lander at the District 1 tournament.

It was a game after two innings on Wednesday in Green River as Riverton's minors all-stars faced the host Green River Nationals at the Wyoming Little League District 1 tournament.

However, with Riverton leading 5-3 heading into the top of the third, everything went horribly wrong for the hosts.

Remy Martinez walked, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3 before Riverton exploded for another eight runs in the frame -- all with two outs -- on the way to an 18-4 victory.

Leadoff man Gabe Clark was the spark plug for the Riverton engine, going 3-for-3 with a double, four runs scored and two batted in atop the order, as part of a 12-hit attack.

Blake Gantenbein had the only other extra-base hit of the game for Riverton.

On the mound, five different pitchers combined for the victory, as Garret Jackson started, only to be relieved by Martinez, Konnor Frost, Jackson Larsen and Gavin Draper, who struck out all three batters he faced to close the game in the bottom of the fourth, when the contest was called due to the 10-run rule.

In all, Clark, Draper, Gantenbein, and Jackson all had multi-hit efforts on the day.

Riverton, who was relegated to the loser's bracket after a 5-4, seven-inning defeat in its opener against Rock Springs on Saturday, will face Lander in second-round action on Thursday at 1 p.m.
