Raiders lose to Jackson in semis of Billings tournament

Riverton managed only six hits against the Giants in defeat.

The Riverton Raiders advanced Sunday to the semifinals of their American Legion baseball tournament in Billings, Montana, to face Jackson for a berth in the title game.

However, that was as far as they got with a 13-6 loss to the Giants.

Jackson only outhit the Raiders by a 7-6 margin, but Riverton was undone by 10 base on balls and three errors.

As has been the case all season, the Raiders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, as Brodie Roden led off the game with a triple, followed by a Kyren Higgs walk, bringing Cody Frazier to the plate with runners at the corners.

Frazier plated Higgs with an RBI groundout and a 2-0 lead, after Roden had scored on a Jackson error.

However, Giants got the pair of runs back in their half of the first off Riverton starter Matt Fisher, who had a shaky outing following recent strong showings. He allowed 11 earned runs on only six hits, while walking nine.

Jackson pitchers also allowed seven walks to Riverton batters on the day and the Raiders had a 6-3 lead after three-and-a-half innings.

In the next two innings, though, the wheels came off for Riverton. Jackson scored five runs in each of the next two frames, with the game ending after five innings due to a tournament-imposed time limit.

Frazier drove in a pair of runs for the Raiders in the loss.

Riverton (25-15, 8-6 A West) hosts Sheridan in a doubleheader at Roy Peck Field on Tuesday, with games scheduled at 4 and 6 p.m.
