Raiders win pair in Billings, face Jackson in semifinals

Jul 9, 2017 - By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor

Riverton defeated Green River and Bozeman in its first two games of the tournament, followed by a loss to Billings.

Riverton's current American Legion campaign has been built largely on an offense which has simply over powered opponents.

However, the Raiders also have proved they can win close, low-scoring battles, with the latest example being a hard-fought 5-4 win against Green River at a tournament in Billings, Montana.

Brodie Roden led off the bottom of the first with a single, then stole second before being driven home by a Cody Frazier double for a quick 1-0 lead.

Green River rebounded with a pair of markers in the top of the second, making the score 2-1.

The Raiders took care of that with a pair of free passes to Dillon Fabricus and Jaren Draper to open their half of the second before a passed ball advanced Fabricus to third. He was then balked home with the tying run.

Kyren Higgs followed with a base hit to chase home Roden and Draper, and it was 4-2.

Riverton held a 5-2 advantage after three innings, before the Knights clawed back a pair, plating single markers in the fourth and fifth innings, but that was all they would get, as Raiders starter Dalton Lassiter was strong, going the distance in allowing only six hits and three earned runs for the victory.

According to Raiders manager Troy Brown, a close game was exactly what his club needed at this point in the season.

"It was a good game for us to be able to battle for a win," said Brown. "It's a good feeling as a manager to know we can win that kind of game."

Riverton 15, Bozeman 6

On Saturday, Riverton bats were back to their usual selves, cranking out 19 hits during a 15-6 win against Bozeman, Montana.

Alex Fabricus was 4-for-4 on the day, while Frazier and Dillon Fabricus were both 3-for-5.

Frazier drove in the contest's first run with an opening-inning single to center, scoring Roden. The frame was punctuated by a Draper double which chased home a pair to make it 4-0.

Riverton held a 6-1 advantage going to the bottom of the third, when Bozeman scored four runs to make it a game at 6-5. No worries, as the Raiders rebounded in the next half-inning with four of their own to restore a 10-5 lead.

A double by Higgs was followed by consecutive singles off the bats of Frazier and Alex Fabricus, which opened the floodgates for an advantage which would prove the difference in the game.

On the mound, Roden pitched a complete game, throwing 98 pitches, while striking out four in the win.

Billings 6, Riverton 4

On Saturday evening, the Raiders bats were shut down in a 6-4 loss to Billings, only managing four hits and falling behind early by a score of 4-1 before a rally came came up short.

The defeat set up a showdown against Jackson in the semifinals on Sunday.

"It was a well-played game," said Brown. "We just didn't hit well enough."
