Lander all-stars finish second at Riverton 10-and-under tourneyJul 9, 2017 By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor
The Legends' all-star squad lost to Green River, 11-7 in the championship game of the Battle at the Winds.
You can't win them all, but you can sure try, which is exactly what Lander's 10-and-under all-stars did in finishing off a strong weekend performance with a runner-up finish at the Lee Martinez Memorial Battle at the Winds tournament.
Brayden Baker had three hits, while David Kempf, Hunter Kihn, Gavin Romer and Jace Hammond each added a pair in an 11-7 championship game loss to Green River, but that didn't dampen the overall result Saturday at the Saban Complex in Riverton.
In Thursday in the play-in game, Lander defeated Riverton in a wild affair by a final of 16-15, a game in which the Legends battled back from a 10-run deficit.
Saturday afternoon saw a rematch with Green River, which had beaten Lander pool play, for the title.
After Green River had plated four runs in the bottom of the first for a 4-0 lead, Lander scored five runs in the top of the second inning, highlighted by base hits from Baker, Porter Plaisted and Hammond, taking a 5-4 advantage in the process.
The lead was short-lived, as Green River came right back with a pair in the bottom half to regain it at 6-5.
The Legends weren't going to fade easily, though, with three runners crossing the plate in the third on hits by Baker, Romer, Andrew Neuendorf and Hammond, which made the score 8-6.
That was all the scoring Lander could muster, as Green River chased home five unanswered markers over the final two innings for the tournament victory.
However, Lander posted a 3-2 record for the weekend, including a pair of wins over Riverton by scores of 16-15 and 9-5, on Thursday and Saturday, respectively, as well as a victory against Rock Springs on Saturday, 11-0.
Previously to the title game, the Legends had lost their first matchup with Green River by a score of 10-1 on Friday.
