Raiders defeat Lovell in Montana

Jul 7, 2017 By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor

Riverton made quick work of the Pioneers in its first game in Montana, winning 12-10 on the 10-run rule.

Scoring early and often has been the benchmark for the Riverton Raiders' offense this season, with the latest prolific performance being a 12-2 victory against Lovell in the opener of a tournament in Billings, Montana on Thursday.

The Pioneers actually struck for the game's opening run in the top of the first against Raiders starter Dalton Baldes, but it wasn't long before Riverton wrested the lead right back.

Brodie Roden and Kyren Higgs were retired by Lovell hurler Riley Hill in the bottom of the first, but no worries, as even with two outs and the bases empty, the Raiders are dangerous.

Cody Frazier worked a nine-pitch walk followed by an Alex Fabricus single which left runners on the corners and the Raiders in business.

Josiah Washington then doubled to chase home Frazier and Fabricus to erase the brief Lovell advantage, then scored himself on a Dillon Fabricus fly ball which was misplayed for an error, and it was 3-1.

In the bottom of the second, the first two Raiders batters were again sent back to the bench before damage was done, only this time Roden and Higgs reached base before back-to-back blunders on balls hit by Frazier and Dillon Fabricus plated a pair, and it was 6-1.

From there, the contest was academic, as Riverton doubled its run total by the end of three frames on the way to another 10-run rule victory.

According to Riverton manager Troy Brown, his club was able to capitalize on Lovell mistakes, which was a pleasant reversal for the Raiders compared to earlier match-ups against the Pioneers this season.

"What happened was they would make an error, then compound it with another mistake," said Brown. "I've been on the other side of that as a manager and it's definitely no fun."

Washington and Dillon Fabricus each had a pair of hits, while Baldes was efficiently effective on the mound, allowing only two runs with eight strikeouts over four innings.

On Friday, Riverton (23-13, 8-6 A West) faces Green River, followed by games against Bozeman and Billings on Saturday before a yet-to-be-determined opponent on Sunday.
