Joseph William Nelson died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at his home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, at Hudson Funeral Home in Lander. A reception will follow.
Joseph William McNeil was born Aug. 11, 1934, in Hayward, Wis. He was raised by Winifred and Peter Nelson in Minneapolis. They later adopted him and raised him as their own.
He went to Madison Grade School and Central High School in Minneapolis. He joined the Marines in 1952.
Mr. Nelson married Shirley Mae Ward on Feb. 4, 1956.
In 1961, Mr. Nelson and his growing family moved to Wyoming where he would spend the rest of his years.
His family said he loved fishing, hunting with friends, the mountains and all that Wyoming had to offer. In his later years he enjoyed working for Fremont Motors as a driver. He loved '50s rock and roll and country music, and his favorites were Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.
His family said he had an amazing sense of humor and was always quick to the punch line. They said he was proud to be an American, and he loved his country and his family.
Mr. Nelson was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps., American Legion and VFW clubs and held numerous prestigious positions including Sargent of Arms for the State of Wyoming, Commander of the American Legion four times and District Commander.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Nelson; four daughters, Laura Lynn and her husband Steve Martin, Cathleen Joe Nordloh and her husband Israel, Lisa Gay Nelson-Norman and her husband Donnie and Pamela Kay and her husband Scott Ross; his brother, Peter Nelson; nine grandchildren, Shane Henman, Ami and her husband Bart Willadson, Reanna and her husband Tommy Heil, Joe Foster, Kendra Calvert, Scott Chambers, Aaron Foster, Lindsey and her husband Jon McCullar and Kimberly and her husband Seth LaBue; and 16 great-grandchildren.
