May 24, 2017 - Kathy Rein, RivertonEditor:
We invite readers to join us as a volunteer to help support our local Riverton Branch Library. The Friends of the Library is a nonprofit group of volunteers who, through various fund raising methods, support many programs and needs of our library which are not otherwise funded.
Over the years, the "Friends" have purchased furniture and electronic equipment, helped refurbish the community room, paid fees for various musicians, magicians, etc., helped fund the annual "Chalk the Walk" program, the children's summer reading
program, and much, much more. Except for minimal operational costs, all funds go back into the library. The "Friends" main source of funds consists of our bi-monthly
"Book Adoption" and book auction. All of our materials are donated (both hardback and paperback books, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, vinyl records, games, puzzles, etc.) and are "adopted" for a very minimal fee. This requires two volunteers for each two-hour shift, four on the @257;rst Wednesday of each month and two on the second or third Saturday of each month. We also require help to sort and shelve donations each week. We work for two hours each Wednesday afternoon, from 1-3 p.m. Volunteers are free to work for as long or as little as they like, and other workdays may be scheduled to fit volunteer availability.
A "Friends" board meeting is held at the library the last Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m., January through October, and anyone who cares to may attend. Library employees
make their requests for funds known to us at these meetings. Unfortunately, our "Friends" group has grown smaller of late and many of us are "older" and not able to do as much as we used to.
We need help. If you would like to see your library's many programs and community services continue, please consider giving us a hand. You may join the "Friends" as a member (dues are $5 per year), but volunteers are not required to be members. We also encourage business memberships for $35 per year.
Pick up a brochure at the front desk or drop in on a Wednesday afternoon work session or a board meeting to see what we're all about.
