Raiders sweep pair from RawlinsMay 23, 2017 By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor
Riverton's American Legion baseball club improved to 4-2 on the season with a home doubleheader victory against the Generals.
The Riverton Raiders hosted the Rawlins Generals in a doubleheader and came away victorious in both ends of the twinbill by scores of 10-4 and 12-2 Saturday at Roy Peck Field.
Originally, the Raiders had been scheduled to play in a tournament in Rawlins, but inclement weather saw the Generals visit Riverton instead. After the 22-run assault the home club put on the visitors, perhaps they wished they had stayed at home after all.
The Raiders wasted no time in opening their account in the initial game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first for a quick 3-0 lead.
Matt Fisher reached on an error, followed by consecutive walks to Cody Frazier and Dillon Fabricus. That brought up Alex Fabricus, who drove in a pair of runs with a base hit.
Dalton Baldes then drove in Alex Fabricus with a single. Riverton had the early advantage, then added two more runs in the second frame.
Fisher began the game on the mound for Riverton and breezed through his first two innings of work before allowing a pair of runs to score in the third and another single marker in the fourth.
The Raiders added a run in the bottom of the fourth, and it was a 6-3 game after four innings.
Dillon Fabricus then took the mound in relief of Fisher and let in only a single run for the visitors the rest of the way.
However, his teammates still had some talking left to do with their bats.
Dillon Lassiter and Kendric Muehler both came around to score runs in the fifth after reaching base on a walk and fielder's choice, respectively.
Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, Dillon Fabricus was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before Alex Fabricus drove his brother home with a double to left field, then scored himself on an RBI groundout by Baldes to close out the scoring.
Riverton 12, Rawlins 2
In the second game, Riverton's big inning was the third, plating seven runs on the way to a 12-2 victory.
Frazier led off with a walk, promptly stole second, then moved to third after Alex Fabricus had been issued a free pass, putting runners at the corners with no outs.
Josiah Washington then stepped in and ripped a double to left, driving in Frazier and Alex Fabricus, increasing the Riverton lead to 5-1.
Baldes then legged out an infield single before Lassiter doubled to make the score 6-1.
Muehler then waited on a breaking ball and pulled it to left for a pair of RBIs. It was 8-1, before back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Dillon Fabricus and Alex Fabricus made it 10-1, all but killing off the game.
Washington then tripled to center field to chase Alex Fabricus home. He scored himself on a single by Lassiter to close out the Riverton scoring.
Baldes and Jereko Martinez combined on the mound to limit Rawlins to only a pair of runs in the victory.
Raiders manager Troy Brown is pleased with what he's seen from his squad so far this season in the early going, particularly against the Generals.
"Offensively, in the first game, we didn't hit the ball very hard, but they weren't catching it," said Brown. "But, in the second game, I thought we hit the ball much better."
On the defensive side, Brown was glad his fielders backed up their pitchers well.
"Both of our starters were struggling to throw strikes," said Brown. "We always tell the guys when that happens to stay alert in the field and not compound it by making mistakes in the field."
Riverton (4-2) hosts Cody in a conference doubleheader Thursday at 5 and 7 p.m.
According to Brown, the matchup with the Cubs will be a barometer for his club.
"I don't know much about Cody until I see them on the field," he said. "But, I definitely like what I see with our team."
