Lady Wolverines lose state opener to Cody, 7-0

Lander's girls defeated Powell, 4-3, in extra time to advance to the Class 3-A state soccer semifinals.

SHERIDAN - The heavy rains stopped before game time, but the wet field and chilly conditions didn't stop the Cody Fillies from peppering shots at the Riverton Lady Wolverines girls soccer team during first-round play Class 3-A state tournament play at the Big Horn Equestrian Center. The Fillies drilled Riverton 7-0 to advance in the winner's bracket, while the Lady Wolverines drop to the consolation play.

The score could have been worse, but Riverton's keeper, Madisyn Pantle, made several athletic saves in the match, including in the first minute, when Cody's Hannah Bailey used her speed and strength to blaze through Riverton's defense and shoot at close range, only to be blocked by a diving Pantle.

Ten minutes later, Fillie McKayla Moss scored. Bailey and Jules Novakovich also scored first half goals for Cody.

"Madisyn really had some great saves, but Cody is a good team," said Riverton head coach Tanya Santee. "They're solid as a team and I think that was pretty clear out there. They do not have a weak link."

After Cody's Genevive Sauers tough-angle shot to the far post found net in the 49th minute, the Fillies rested most of their starters the rest of the way.

Rebecca Brantz, Tegan Thompson and Alexa Prosceno, all underclassmen, also scored for Cody.

"I think we had our moments despite the score," said Santee. "I keep remembering we have this whole squad back."

Riverton's girls will battle Powell in consolation play on Friday.

Lander 4, Powell 3

In the other early Class 3-A first-round match, the Lander Lady Tigers, with two goals including the overtime game-winner from Abby Renner, survived, 4-3, over the Powell Lady Panthers.

Kiley McConnell and Molly Fehringer also scored in Lander's come-from- behind win.

Fehringer's goal came with just seconds left in regulation and gave the Tigers the opportunity to play in extra time.
