We've all said stupid things before that we don't mean. While I understand this, I personally believe Sen. Mike Enzi said exactly what he meant to some of the most vulnerable among us in an isolated place where he felt safe. He has a responsibility to prove to the LGBTQ community that he understands no one "asks" for assault.
Senator Enzi must publicly support a memorial for Mathew Shepard to make his apology more than just words. He can be remembered for "tutugate" and the petition calling for his resignation, or for his role in raising awareness and allowing the healing to begin in this state. I hope to see him chose the latter.
