Lady Tigers take conference title

May 7, 2017 - By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor

Lander's girls claimed the Class 3-A Southeast soccer crown with a 2-1 road win against Rawlins.

Clear your calendar if you're a Lander Lady Tigers soccer supporter, because the weekend of May 18-20 has been booked with a trip to the Class 3-A state tournament in Sheridan after a 2-1 Lander victory Friday at Rawlins.

Goals by Molly Fehringer and Kiley McConnell in the third and 50th minutes, respectively, secured victory over their league foes and clinched the Class 3-A Southeast title in the process.

Lander finished with a perfect 4-0 conference campaign. Head coach Gabe Joyes couldn't be happier.

"Our number-one goal from the start of the season was to win our conference and get to state," said Joyes. "It was another good game, although I was concerned we might've had tired legs and got off to a slow start."

No worries, as Fehringer's early strike quickly laid those concerns to rest, followed by McConnell's goal in the opening 10 minutes of the second half.

Lander 3, Torrington 0

On Thursday, the Lady Tigers took a step closer to the conference title with a comprehensive 3-0 home victory over Torrington.

McConnell opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Later, senior Zoe Peterson gathered a ball, then cut back to her left before netting in the 42nd minute for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Renner added a goal in the 60th minute, and it was job well done, as the Tigers then controlled their own destiny knowing a win the following afternoon in Rawlins would punch their ticket to Sheridan.

"It's great to be in the driver's seat," said Joyes. "We're definitely headed in the right direction."

However, despite victory the LVHS boss acknowledged there was still work left.

"We're happy with the victory," said Joyes. "But our job isn't done."

Lander 3, Newcastle 1

Following the conference clincher in Rawlins, the Lady Tigers returned home to host Newcastle on Saturday and produced another fine performance in a 3-1 win.

Freshman Abby Renner opened the scoring in the 12th minute before McConnell added a second in the 25th minute, followed by a Peterson strike in the 65th minute to take away any hopes the Lady Dogies had of victory.

That's four wins now on the bounce for Joyes' club, which left him pleased with how his squad performed despite having secured a spot at state the previous day.

"Earlier in the season there were times when we lacked the competitiveness we have now," he said. "The girls are hungry for victories."

Lander (6-5, 4-0 Class 3-A Southeast) faces Riverton in the regular-season finale at 5 p.m.Tuesday at Wolverine Field.
