May 3, 2017 - By Scott Akanewich, Sports EditorRiverton Little League majors began their season with a double-header.
One diamond at Saban Little League Complex in Riverton saw plenty of runs on Tuesday, and one did not.
On the northwest field, the Giants beat the Dodgers, 4-1, while on the southwest corner of the ground, the Cardinals defeated the Tigers, 8-4, in season-opening majors action.
Jason Vincent was the hitting star for the Cardinals, going 3-for-3 with a double and four runs scored, while SeanDean Brown added a pair of hits.
The Cards wasted no time in the first inning, as leadoff man Garrett Raymond and Vincent both got on base, then came around to score for a quick 2-0 lead.
However, the Tigers responded in kind and scored a run of their own in the bottom of the first, as Chris Reinig led off by getting on and plating to make it 2-1.
Both offenses were silenced in the second stanza, only for the Cardinals to spark offensively again in the third frame of the game.
Vincent and Hunter Hauck both banged base hits, followed by a bases-clearing double by Brown on a 3-and-2 pitch to make the score 4-1.
The Tigers managed to pull back a pair in their half of the fifth, when Reinig and Nathan Hutchison both drew walks before rounding the circuit and scoring to make it a 5-4 game.
But, it was that man Vincent again who had a single and double in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, scoring both times, to provide the final margin of victory.
Giants 4, Dodgers 1
On the southwest field in a crisply-played contest, the Giants defeated the Dodgers by a 4-1 scoreline.
It was the Dodgers who jumped out early with a run in their half of the first to take a 1-0 lead on a walk by leadoff hitter Tyler Hernandez, who then scored on a Wyatt Frazier double.
However, that was all the offense the boys in blue could muster as Giants pitchers Starin Person and Brodie Dale shut down the opposition's bats the rest of the way.
It was the mound men who also got it done at the plate for the Giants, with a hat trick of runs in the third inning, as Person, Dale and Dallon Draper all scored for a 3-1 lead, before adding another to close out the scoring.
Next up in majors, the Rockies will face the Tigers. The Giants play the Cardinals on Thursday.
