Wolverine boys blank Cody in road matchApr 30, 2017 By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer
Slade Becker scored a pair of goals in a 3-0 victory.
The Riverton Wolverine boys soccer team, ranked second in Wyoming Class 3-A boys soccer, earned a big 3-0 non-conference win Saturday over the Cody Broncs in Park County.
The match was Riverton's only on-field work this weekend. Friday's game against Powell was postponed because of weather.
The Wolverines (8-3-2, 3-0-1 Class 3-A Southwest) now have 10 days to prepare for their next match, a Tuesday, May 9 donnybrook against cross-county rival Lander, currently the state's top-ranked team.
Originally, the match was scheduled for this coming Tuesday, but was moved because of conflicts with other activities.
The long delay is not the best way to prepare for the upcoming state tournament. In fact, Riverton will have just the Lander match prior to taking the field at the Big Horn Equestrian Center near Sheridan when the state tournament begins Thursday, May 18. That's one match in 19 days.
"That drives me crazy," said RHS head coach Aziz Waheed. "At first it was go, go, go. Now its like this is so unusual. In the last nine years, we've always had regionals to prepare for (when Riverton was in Class 4-A)."
In Saturday's game in Cody, Nic Fenton's left footed blast after taking a pass from Evan White got Riverton on the board early, coming in the sixth minute.
Slade Becker also scored twice in the second half. Reed Axthelm was credited with both assists.
"Saturday's match was fun. We scored in a variety of ways, and it is good for us when we scored early," said Waheed. "But the rest of the first half, I was happy with how we played, but we could have done it with more urgency, and the team agreed."
