Fremont County track athletes competing well

Apr 30, 2017 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

Riverton's Naya Shime has qualified in four different events at the Casper Classic.

In spite of some of the worst spring weather for track and field competition in recent memory, athletes from Fremont County's eight high schools have posted some impressive times in specific events this season.

Riverton freshman Naya Shime leads with top performances in the long jump, high jump and both hurdle races.

Shime has qualified for the Casper Classic on Tuesday in all four events and boasts the state's best effort in the high jump with a leap of 5-4.

The Riverton boys dominate the county's best efforts this season, with top times in the sprints, hurdles, jumps and throws.

St. Stephen's junior Xavier Hubbard leads in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs and Wyoming Indian senior Natuin Trosper has the best time in the 800 meters.

Only Nathan Motherway of Lander in the pole vault kept the Wolverines from sweeping all six field events.

The Riverton boys and girls have five of the top six relay times, with Wyoming Indian's 8:46 in the 4x800-meter relay the only baton event not in Wolverines red.

Alec Richardson leads the state in the long jump with an impressive 23-7 leap and also has the top triple jump in the county.

Riverton's Brodie Roden takes top honors on the track with top times in the 100, 200 and 300 hurdles.

Riverton's 4x100 meter relay is just .13 seconds behind Kelly Walsh's 43.32 time in the event and the Wolverines' quartet of Roden, Richardson, Jared Kobbe and Jaron Draper shattered the school record already.

The Casper Classic, generically known by its predecessor's name, the Meet of Champs, is dominated by Riverton this year.

The event features the top eight athletes in the sprints and hurdles and the top 10 distance times and field event efforts.

Roden qualified in the 100, 200 and 300 intermediate hurdles, Richardson in the long jump, triple jump and 100- meter dash, Kylan Shultz in the high jump and high hurdles and Hunter Lee in the shot put and discus.

Shoshoni's Zac Pickinpaugh and Lander's Conrad Swenson are the only other Fremont County competitors, with both running in the 300 meter hurdles.

Shime is qualified in all four of her county-leading events, along with Shoshoni's Gaven Murphy in the 3200-meter run.
