Wolverines head north for weekend

Apr 27, 2017 By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

Both Riverton High School soccer teams travel to Park County for a pair of matches Friday and Saturday.

Up first are Friday's matches in Powell.

The Lady Wolverines (4-9, 2-2 Class 3-A Southwest) battle the Lady Panthers (4-7, 0-4 Class 3A Northwest) at 4 p.m.

Because both Powell and Cody play in different quadrants from Riverton, the matches this weekend will not impact final conference standings.

The Lady Wolverines will finish in second place in the Class 3-A Southwest and will play the third-place team from the Class 3-A Southeast, Torrington, on May 13 to see which team will qualify for the state tournament.

Boys

The RHS boys team (8-3-2, 3-0-1 Class 3-A Southwest), having already earned an automatic berth to the state tournament, meets Powell (3-7, 0-4 Class 3-A Northwest) at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, the Lady Wolverines take on the undefeated Cody Fillies (12-0, 4-0 Class 3-A Northwest) at 10 a.m. The RHS boys team, ranked second in statewide media polling, will follow with their match against Cody (8-3-2, 4-1 Class 3-A Northwest) at noon. Earlier this year at Wolverine Field, Cody and Riverton played to a scoreless draw.

Both Riverton soccer teams play their final regular-season matches at Wolverine Field against Lander on Tuesday, May 2.

The games kick off at 5 p.m. (girls) and 7 p.m. (boys). For the boys, the match against Lander, many believe, could be a preview of the Class 3-A state championship game. Lander is the top-ranked boys team in Wyoming and defeated Riverton earlier this season.
