A pair of state-champion Riverton High School wrestlers made the trip to Des Moines, Iowa, on April 1-2 for the Iowa National Duals for high school underclassmen from across the country.
Hayden Wempen, who recently won the Class 3-A 182-pound state title, and his RHS teammate, freshly crowned 113-pound champ freshman Ridge Briggs, were on the mats in the capital of the Hawkeye State as both grapplers represented the Cowboy State as part of Team Wyoming.
The competition also featured teams from Iowa, Indiana, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado and Tennessee.
On the team side, Wyoming finished third in the gold bracket behind Indiana and Iowa.
Wempen posted a 7-1 record for the weekend, including falls over opponents from Indiana, Tennessee and Montana, and decisions over wrestlers from Iowa and Nebraska.
Briggs went 4-4, including victories against Montana and Indiana.
Leading up to the event in Iowa, Wempen also competed March 17-18 in Denver at the Rocky Mountain Nationals, finishing sixth in a 24-man bracket in an 18-and-under field. He also wrestled in Virginia Beach, Virginia,March 25-26.
