Wyoming Basketball Set For Foreign Tour to Canada
Aug 2, 2012 - UW Sports Information
Laramie, Wyo. (Aug. 2, 2012) - The University of Wyoming men's basketball team hits the road on Sunday for a week-long trip to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, as the Cowboys take their first foreign tour since 2006. UW will play three games as part of the 2012 Battle of the Border tournament, which features fellow NCAA Division I member Montana State and three Canadian schools.
Wyoming opens the tournament versus the host University of Calgary Dinos at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, before squaring off with the Mount Royal University Cougars at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Cowboys conclude tournament play against the Dinos at 8:15 p.m. on Friday. UW's game against the University of Alberta on Saturday has been cancelled.
All games will be played under FIBA international rules in the Jack Simpson Gym on Calgary's campus and all times are Mountain. The Cowboys will have recreation days on Monday and Thursday, while Sunday and Saturday will serve as travel days.
UW previously visited the same tournament under former head coach Steve McClain in the summer of 2006, winning two games against the Dinos by scores of 91-63 and 79-67. The Cowboys join Lamar, Middle Tennessee State and Creighton as NCAA institutions to compete in the tournament since 2007. The NCAA permits basketball programs one foreign tour every four years, including 10 practice sessions prior to leaving the country.
The Cowboys earned their first 20-win campaign since 2003 with a 21-12 record last season, but saw six seniors, including three starters, complete their eligibility. UW will welcome three freshmen and four transfers this fall on a 14-man roster that features just three seniors and two juniors. Charles Hankerson Jr. will be the only Cowboy not to make the trip, due to NCAA transfer rules.
