Library airs Mozart's opera on Trojan War aftermath

Mar 19, 2017 - From wire reports

The opera is regarded as the composer's first authentic masterpiece -- the earliest full expression of his adult creative genius.

Mozart's landmark dramatic opera "Idomeneo" will be broadcast live from New York's Metropolitan Opera at the Lander library on Saturday, March 25.

The Mozartean take on Homer has Idomeneus, the victorious king of Crete, returning home from the Trojan War through a shipwreck, only to make a thoughtless vow that brings down the wrath of the gods on his island kingdom and on two young lovers: his son Idamante and the captive Trojan princess Ilia.

Saving the two of them means confronting two dire threats: A venomous Greek princess with eyes for Idamante, and a sea monster sent by the gods.

Mozart himself conducted the world premiere of "Idomeneo"in 1781 at the age of 25. The opera is regarded as the composer's first authentic masterpiece -- the earliest full expression of his adult creative genius.

Despite its landmark status, "Idomeneo"did not get its U.S. premiere until 1947. Since then, it has taken a firm place in the repertoire of great American opera houses.

Lander Met Opera will bring "Idomeneo"to our community in a live HD video broadcast featuring sumptuous sets and romantic costumes offering an 18th century take on ancient dress.

"Idomeneo"will be sung in its original Italian with English subtitles, broadcast beginning upstairs in the Carnegie Room at 10:55 a.m. and concluding shortly before 3 p.m.

Adult tickets cost $10 donation; student tickets are $5. There will be three acts, separated by two 35-minute intermissions.

Box lunches from the Breadboard restaurant will be served during the first intermission near noontime at an additional cost of $8 per person to patrons who pre-order them before the start of the broadcast.
