Eagles beat Doggers for fifth

Mar 5, 2017 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

Xavier Hubbard led St. Stephen's with 17 points in a 51-32 victory over Lingle-Fort Laramie in the Class 1-A consolation final.

St. Stephen's rolled to two straight wins and the Class 1-A boys consolation championship early Saturday afternoon behind a dominating 51-32 win over the Lingle-Fort Laramie Doggers at Kelly Walsh High School.

The Eagles took the lead early on a Vincent Brown 3-point shot and never looked back in a game that was decided early on.

Lingle had little to no offense through much of the opening half and only Eagles fouls kept the Southeastern conference team on the scoreboard. Lingle scored all five first-period points from the free-throw line.

The Eagles didn't shoot well on the other end of the floor either, but the inside play of Antonio and Isaih Divers and the blazing-fast penetration and pull-up jump-shooting of Xavier Hubbard gave St. Stephen's a six-point cushion after one period.

Hubbard hit a pull up 3-pointer at the buzzer for an opening highlight.

Ty Mueller finally hit the first basket for Lingle with 5:37 left in the half and it sparked the Doggers for a while.A second Hubbard three and a pair of step-through follow shots by Antonio Divers kept the Eagles in a narrow advantage.

Brown hit a 3-point shot to end the half with St. Stephen's on top, 21-17.

The second half was a flash of red, with St. Stephen's defense limiting Lingle to just a single basket.

Meanwhile, Hubbard and Brown rained in threes and the Divers' brother took care of play in the paint for a 19-2 third quarter that blew open the game.

St. Stephen's biggest lead came with 6:56 remaining when Hubbard dazzled the crowd with a spinning, fast-break finger roll between a pair of defenders for a 46-19 lead.

Eagles head coach Ricky Blackburn began to substitute freely with the big lead and every player on the squad picked up valuable tournament time.

Hubbard paced the Eagles with 17 points including four 3-pointers, whileAntonio Divers scored 13 and Brown 11, with all three of his baskets from beyond the arc.
