Central women lose tough oneFeb 15, 2017 By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor
The Lady Rustlers put up strong opposition to Gillette College in an 82-72 home defeat.
Atajma Criss-Felton hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring for the Lady Rustlers of Central Wyoming College on Saturday in a home contest against Gillette College on her way to a squad-leading 18 points.
However, despite her efforts, along with 13 points from Kyla Paulus and another 11 by Loveeda White, Central came up just short in an 82-72 defeat to the visiting Lady Pronghorns.
The score was tied on four different occasions in the first half, highlighted by a Myriah Fauber 3-pointer, which pulled the Lady Rustlers within 21-18 with 9:35 remaining in the opening 20 minutes.
But, the Lady Pronghorns led at the half, 33-26.
The second half was a high-flying affair with both sides increasing their first-half scoring outputs.
Gillette opened the scoring, which was immediately answered by a pair of field goals from Paulus and White, which pulled the Rustlers to within five at 35-30.
A 9-0 Central run shortly thereafter briefly gave the home side the lead at 41-40 on a pair of baskets each by Criss-Felton and Paulus, as well as another from Olivia Thompson.
Unfortunately, it would be the last time the Lady Rustlers would be in front the rest of the way, despite pulling within 46-44 midway through the second half on a Bailey Forney bucket and never trailing by more than single-digits until the final margin.
Central head coach Ken Swartz praised his charges for the fight they showed against the powerful Pronghorns.
"Without question, one of our best games of the year against one of the best teams in Region IX," said Swartz.
"We executed extremely well on both ends of the floor. They're a quality team and we hung in there. I'm extremely proud of these young ladies."
Central (5-18, 2-7 Region IX North) will next face a road game against Casper College on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
