Jun 24, 2016 - By Andrea Novotny, Staff WriterIncoming School District 25 kindergarten students are encouraged to attend Camp Kindergarten, scheduled from 8-11 a.m. Monday through Thursday, July 25 through Aug. 11, at Aspen Early Learning Center, formerly Aspen Park Elementary School, 1620 E. Sunset Dr. in Riverton.
The three-week introductory session is intended to alleviate stress for both parents and students before school starts, incoming Aspen principal Sheryl Esposito said.
Camp Kindergarten will have an academic component but will focus primarily on getting students used to schedules and other classroom practices, and giving them a chance to meet teachers and other students.
Bus transportation will be available.
The camp is both for students who will be attending traditional kindergarten and students who will be in the new two-year "kinder-boost," program which was created to give additional support to students who are not developmentally ready for kindergarten.
Esposito said students may or may not be placed in a classroom with the teacher they will have during the school year.
Any student registered for kindergarten is welcome to attend.
Although early kindergarten registration numbers are roughly the same as what they usually are at this time of year, Esposito said having students register early is especially important this year because students will need to be screened in order to determine whether they are placed in kindergarten or kinder-boost. The screening takes 20-30 minutes.
"We normally have about 90 students sign up in August. We're trying to preempt that and get them to sign up a little bit earlier so we can get that screening done and placements made before school starts," Esposito said.
Registration is offered at Fremont County District 25 Central Office, 121 N. 5th St. W., Riverton. Parents will need to bring birth certificates, immunization records and proof of residency in order to register. Once Aspen opens on July 25, registration will be offered there as well.
