- The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is investigating a mountain lion killing that occurred on a rural road north of Lander Monday night.

Brian DeBolt, who is a management officer with the Lander-based Game and Fish office, said a landowner on the Lower North Fork Road by Milford shot and killed the lion after it killed the family's pet cat.

"It's legal (to shoot a mountain lion) that is threatening their safety or property," DeBolt said. "In this case, it killed their cat and was unwilling to leave."

According to the Fremont County Sheriff's Office dispatch log, law enforcement received a call from the man at 8:28 p.m. on Monday reporting he shot the lion in his front yard after it attacked his animal and refused to leave the area.

The incident was turned over to Game and Fish, which is still investigating the killing.

DeBolt said this is the second time this year a mountain lion killed a pet near Lander. The other incident occurred earlier in the spring and involved a lion fatally attacking a dog at a residence in the same region as the recent event.

"I would say we are seeing no more than usual," he said about lion attacks in the Lander area.
