David J. Payne

Longtime Lander resident David J. Payne, 47, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at his home surrounded by friends and family after a lengthy battle with multiple sclerosis.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services are at 11 a.m. Friday, June 29, at Hudson's Funeral Home in Lander. A celebration of life will follow in Sinks Canyon.

David Joseph Payne was born April 3, 1965, in Lander to Kathleen Payne.

His family said he enjoyed hunting, fishing and was active in wrestling through junior and senior high school. At Lander Valley High School, he participated in Deca and R.O.T.C. He earned his diploma through LVHS in 1983.

He was a Boy Scout and went on to achieve the Order of the Arrow.

The family said he enjoyed playing baseball and softball in the summer months and umpired for the league.

He was employed as a carry-out boy and checker at a local grocery store through high school and into his early 20s.

In 1986, he married Cindy Cadman in Lander. They had a son, Colby Tyler Payne, on June 23, 1986. The couple later divorced.

Mr. Payne pursued a career in pipe lining in Wyoming and the surrounding states until his health forced him to retire.

He is survived by his mother, Kathleen Payne of Casper; an aunt, Charolette Hare of Lander; sister Susan Short of Mills; three nieces, Hiedi Short, Tabitha Johnson and Tammy Burch of Casper; a son, Colby Payne; stepdaughter Tajia Cleveland; stepson Silas Cleveland; granddaughter Lexi Noland, all of Lander.

Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mary and Les Hallack Sr. of Casper; two aunts, Enda Krause and Margaret Hallock of Lander; two uncles, Les Jr. and Paul "Babe" Hallock of Casper; and a cousin, John Hallock, formerly of Casper.
