Jun 27, 2012 - UW Sports InformationLaramie, Wyo. (June 27, 2012) - Former University of Wyoming men's basketball student-athlete Adam Waddell is set to play in a NetScouts Basketball tournament in China from June 29-July 9. Waddell will join nine other players to form a U.S. all-star team that will compete against national teams from China, Lithuania and Germany in a three-city, nine-game round robin format.
"I want to keep pursuing my basketball career, so this tournament in China will be a great opportunity for me to see if playing overseas is something I want to do," Waddell said. "[Wyoming] Coach [Larry] Shyatt helped put me in contact with the tournament organizers and things have taken off from there. It's amazing how basketball has allowed me to travel all over the U.S. and now halfway across the world. I am looking forward to it."
The U.S. team will face Lithuania, Germany and China in successive days at each stop. The tournament starts with three days in Liuzhou, Guangxi on June 29, continues in Langzhong, Sichuan on July 3 and concludes in Taiyuan, Shanxi on July 7.
"I'm very happy for Adam that he has decided to make this trip," UW head coach Larry Shyatt said. "He's in good health and this is a great chance for him to represent our country and audition for a job overseas."
Waddell capped his Cowboy career with a stellar senior season in 2011-12. He averaged 9.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and one block per contest, while helping UW to a 21-12 record and postseason berth. Waddell was one of two Cowboys to start all 33 games during the season. He ranked fourth in the Mountain West in blocks, and his 72.4 percent from the free throw line was eight.
Waddell scored in double figures in 16 games during 2011-12, including 17 points, five rebounds and a block against Colorado on Dec. 9 to earn MW Player of the Week. A native of Cody, Wyo., Waddell finished his career seventh on UW's all-time games played list with 124 appearances and ninth in blocks with 93. He earned his bachelor's degree in communications from UW in May of 2011.
