Jan 5, 2016 - By Alejandra Silva, Staff WriterRiverton's first baby of 2016 was born two days after the New Year at SageWest Health Care at Riverton.
Marcalino Alexander Anderson came into the world at 9:06 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, weighing 6 pounds, 1.3 ounces.
His mother, Sharice LaJeunesse, was expecting him to arrive later in the month, around Jan. 22, but she got some unexpected news when she visited the hospital this week regarding a small concern.
LaJeunesse was told she was 5 centimeters dilated.
"I was scared, happy and excited," LaJeunesse said. "After they checked me, they said, 'You're having the baby today.'"
At 37 weeks, and after about five hours of labor, LaJeunesse delivered the healthy baby, who is now the youngest of three boys including older brothers Dredan Yellowbear and Luciano Anderson.
The baby's father is Elijah Anderson.
Businesses in Riverton have offered the new baby and his mother several gifts. Many are personalized presents including a floral bouquet, a one-hour massage for LaJeunesse and gift baskets.
Riverton's hospital welcomed its second baby of the year Jan. 4. The girl, who has not yet been named, was born at 1:06 p.m. Monday to parents Rayna Oldman and Bradlee Wadda.
Both 2016 babies, as well as the last baby of 2015, are being celebrated with initial funding for a 529 Education Savings Account from a local investment firm. The first baby of 2016 was offered $100, while the second baby of 2016 and the last baby of 2015 were offered $50 each.
The same gift also was extended to the first two babies of 2016 and the last baby of 2015 born in Lander.
