Disappointing not to get to vote for all commissioners

May 24, 2012 By Carol Downs, Riverton

I always look forward to the news about the candidates filing for the various offices in an election. This year it has been fun to see who is filing for the Fremont County Commission in the the seat now held by Dog Thompson. As I was reading about who had filed for that spot, which includes Commissioner Thompson, I was thinking about how fun it would be to get to vote in that election on primary day.

And then it hit me. I don't get to vote in that because the lawsuit has divided everything up into districts now. That is not "my" district, so no vote.

I did not always live here. When we moved one of the first things I thought was that Fremont County's way of voting for the commissioners by giving everybody a vote on every commissioner legislator was a great way to have an election, and the turnout of voters here each election was phenomenal.

First the legislators were "districted out," and now the same has happened with the commissioners. The main result is going to be a lot lower voter turnout and a less interested group of voters. It is a shame.
