Jan 21, 2014 - By Katie Roenigk, Staff WriterLocal officials are investigating the shooting death of Nathan Hatfield, 18, of Riverton, who was found at about 4:30 p.m. Monday near the Rails to Trails pathway in southwest Riverton.
The incident was listed as a suicide on public law enforcement reports, but Fremont Coroner Ed McAuslan said he has not made that ruling yet.
An autopsy will be performed Wednesday afternoon in Loveland, Colo.
"We'll wait and see what preliminary information (is available) from the autopsy," McAuslan said.
A person walking on the Rails to Trails near the Riverwalk by the Wind River called police Monday afternoon with the report.
"Nobody else was there at the time," McAuslan said.
Officials at the Riverton Police Department wouldn't comment on the initial call.
McAuslan said the death will be investigated as a homicide until it is proven otherwise.
"We approach every death that way," McAuslan said, adding, "It's a shooting death, so it's not a normal situation."
Hatfield was listed among All-State Band participants from Riverton High School for 2013.
