Wranglers host tournament

Dec 19, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The invitational marks the home debut for both Shoshoni teams.

Four games apiece in two days are in store for the Shoshoni High School basketball programs Friday and Saturday at the Wrangler Invitational tournament.

The tournament starts at 10 a.m. Friday when the Shoshoni girls face Farson-Eden.

The SHS boys play in the 11:30 a.m. game against the same opponent.

The games are the home openers for SHS.

In the evening session Friday, the SHS girls play at 7 p.m. against Hanna, followed by the boys.

The second day starts at 10 a.m. in a contest between the Upton girls and Shoshoni. The boys game follows.

The tournament finishes with a 5:30 p.m. SHS vs. Dubois doubleheader.

"It will be nice to play on our home floor," SHS girls coach Max Mills said. "The games will wear on the kids a little bit, but it's great right before Christmas break."

The SHS girls check into the tournament standing with a 2-4 mark. The SHS boys are 3-3.

"We don't have to worry about conference games next week or practice. The way the schedule is set up we play first and last both days. We have a lot of time in between to recover. The kids just get excited to play that much basketball."

The Upton girls have the best record in the tournament at 5-0.

"The big thing this weekend is to not to let people have easy drives into the keys and not have easy layups and jump shots," Mills said.

Shoshoni posted a 0-3 record last Friday and Saturday at the Burns Classic.

"We really have a young team with only two seniors and two juniors," Mills said. "We have a lot to learn when it comes to varsity basketball."

The girls fell to Lingle-Fort Laramie (61-20), Pine Bluffs (55-32) and to Burns (52-30).

"Last weekend, we played a lot of really good basketball teams," Mills said.

"They did the little things correctly that we are still learning how to do. You could not question the work ethnic of any of my players."
