Rustlers set to host home eventOct 12, 2017 By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor
Cross country runners will traverse the red rocks and rugged trails of Sinks Canyon as Central Wyoming College will host Gillette College in a dual meet Saturday on the expansive, scenic course just outside Lander for the CWC home invitational.
Last week, the Rustlers ran at the Yellowjacket Invitational, hosted by Montana State University-Billings, and recorded some promising results.
Breanna Beaslen finished 13th for the women, with a time of 20:56.38 around the 3-mile course. She was the highest-ranked Central runner at the event.
Lady Rustlers teammate Rebekah Hutchison finished 18th with an effort of 21:32.10, while Jessica Stewart was 20th (21:49.57), Sienna Schuler was 23rd (22:07.12), and Jesslyn Monahan was 29th (22:42.32).
Tori Moore of Black Hills State University was the winner in 18:56.74.
Central finished fourth as a team with 97 points, behind winner Black Hills State's 23 points.
On the men's side, Lukas Mathews led the way for the Rustlers in 19th place with a time of 23:46.57. Jorey Egeland of MSU-Billings won the race in 21:46.65.
Other Central finishers were Zach Relf (21st, 24:06.08), Dominic Twomey (24th, 24:26.58), Erick Nkunzimana (25th, 24:43.03) and Joseph Crane (35th, 30:30.20).
The Rustlers finished fourth in the team standings, with 104 points, as Black Hills State won the event with 23 points.
According to Central head coach Al Lara, he needs more from further down the depth chart to be competitive in their home meet.
"Our fifth runners in both races have to step up the pace in order to be a factor in our dual meet this week," said Lara. "There are three more meets left in the season that are all against junior college schools, so we're really looking forward to finishing strong."
On Saturday, the women's race is scheduled for 9 a.m., with the men's event to follow.
