Lander 22, Cody 0 -- 1973Oct 8, 2017 From staff reports
Both the Lander Tigers and the Riverton Wolverines were in the midst of outstanding football seasons at the first week of October ended 44 years ago this week. Lander stood 5-2 overall and was undefeated at 5-0 in the West AA conference.
Riverton was 6-1 overall but had a conference loss and trailed Lander in the West AA by a game. (The AA classification was the equivalent of today's Class 4-A).
Lander wasn't an explosive team with the ball, but the Tigers were stingy on defense, allowing just 13 points a game through seven games.
The Tigers used that defense in getting a big win over Cody on Oct. 12 that locked up a share of the West AA regular-season conference crown.
Quarterback Dan Svilar and halfback Shawn Wortman scored all of Lander's points in the 22-0 win at Tiger Stadium.
Three weeks later, Fremont County football fans got just what they wanted when Lander traveled to Tonkin Stadium in Riverton for the game that would determine the conference chap and a spot in the AA state championship game. Riverton won it 38-6 and moved into the title for the second straight year.
