Eagles score first, get hammered by RebelsOct 3, 2017 By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer
St. Stephen's battled the visiting Riverside Rebels in Class 1-A 6-man action on a perfect Friday afternoon and played well for the opening quarter.
The Eagles scored with 6:16 left in the first on a 43-yard run by Trenton Friday to cut the score to 7-6, but the wheels came off after that with Riverside rolling on 58 unanswered points to take a 64-6 win.
The game was highlighted by an outstanding performance from Riverside junior Ryan Vigil, who scored six touchdowns with runs of 41, 20 and 16 yards and added the other three through the air on passes of 19, 23 and 47 from quarterback Justen Miller.
The Eagles hit hard with thumping open-field tackles but Riverside's passing game was too much for their secondary to handle.
Perhaps the best hit came when Little-Sun Felter unloaded on Miller in the open field on a pancake-style tackle.
Big plays were key for the Rebels, with touchdowns of over 40 yards on three plays.
Eagles junior Vincent Brown has an excellent arm and sailed the ball on perfect spirals through the clear air, but Eagles receivers had trouble breaking free and Brown was only able to connect on short passes with only three more coming beyond 20 yards.
St. Stephen's has a tough challenge next Friday with a trip to Baggs to play the third-ranked and unbeaten Little Snake River Rattlers.
