Local grocery store to closeSep 12, 2017 From staff reports
After decades as a cornerstone of the local retail business community, Riverton's Safeway store is closing.
Albertson's, another prominent grocery chain, owns the Safeway brand as well, and Albertson's leadership made the decision to shutter the store.
Safeway could close within 30 days.
Local store employees contacted by The Ranger said they were informed of the decision Monday morning.
They said managers mentioned the failure of Albertson's to reach a new lease agreement on the Safeway building, which has a different owner.
But a statement from Albertson's public-relations official Kathy Holland referred to Riverton's Safeway as "an underperforming store."
Safeway once was a downtown Riverton business on South Third East and twice has built new stores on North Federal Boulevard.
The current structure at the northwest corner of North Federal Boulevard and East Pershing Avenue underwent extensive renovations a few years ago.
