Lady Wolverines third at Rawlins

Sep 10, 2017 By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

The Riverton Lady Wolverines volleyball team advanced to the gold bracket at the Rawlins Invitational volleyball tournament and finished overall in third place, behind host Rawlins and Worland, in championship play on Saturday.

The big news of the weekend was Riverton downed Torrington 2-1 (21-16, 13-21, 15-5) in the third-place match on Saturday afternoon. Torrington had beat the Lady Wolverines in three sets 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 11-25, 25-22, 15-9) in Wolverine Gym last week.

"First game we played lights out (against Torrington) and we talked about it," said Riverton head coached Trista Day. "We wanted to get a little revenge and show them how we felt last week should have ended."

Riverton beat Star Valley 2-1 (20-21, 21-10, 15-10) to open gold bracket play, but were corralled by eventual champion Rawlins 2-0 (21-12, 21-14) prior to the third- place match.

On Friday, the Lady Wolverines beat Buffalo (2-0) and the Rawlins junior varsity (2-0), but fell to Mountain View (0-2) during pool play.

"I think we made improvements as far as the whole team goes," said Day. "This weekend really pulled us together and we're starting to realize we have to have all six of us who are on the court be a part of the game."

The Lady Wolverines will have a busy homecoming week beginning with Thursday evening match at Lander. On Friday and Saturday, the Lady Wolverines host Pinedale and Mountain View, respectively.

At Rawlins, Day was pleased with the effort and play in both the front and back row of Naya Shime, the setting of Hannah Reinig and the defense of Mackenzie Becker.

"Naya was consistent throughout and had some huge kills that were amazing and was smart with the ball," said Day. "When Hannah jump sets, people don't know what's happening."
